The Center of Worker Justice is a dynamic workers’ center based in Iowa City and spearheaded by a leadership of immigrants and refugees with a strong track record of organizing across language and immigration status for systemic change. Through collaboration and partnerships with a broad network of labor, faith-based, and civil rights organizations, CWJ has created a momentum of grassroots movement leading to great victories in Johnson County to defend workers’ rights, tenants’ rights and affordable housing, immigration policies, and more.

JOB DESCRIPTION:
The Center for Worker Justice is seeking a passionate and dedicated Community Organizer to join our team. ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
The chosen candidate will be responsible for member recruitment, leader development, and coordination of ongoing worker justice campaigns. The ideal candidate must possess a minimum of one year of paid experience of conducting social and worker justice campaigns, facilitating membership meetings, leading direct actions, and collaborating with a diverse membership.

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop campaign strategy with a focus on confronting wage theft, defending tenants’ rights, promoting economic and social justice, and advocating for good local ordinances.
  • Recruit, identify, and develop worker members to guide and lead campaigns.
  • Develop and implement community outreach campaigns with goals to include expanding CWJ’s individual and institutional membership.
  • Coordinate with allied organization and community groups in campaign building.
  • Motivate individual workers and groups of workers to take action.
  • Organize and conduct events.
  • Carry out fundraising campaigns.
  • Coordinate and supervise the activities of interns and volunteers.
  • Any other duties as dictated by CWJ vision and programs.

QUALIFIED CANDIDATE MUST OBTAIN:

  • At least one year of paid experience in community or labor organizing.
  • Excellent communication skills in English and Spanish. Additional languages are a bounce.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, including one-on-one communication (active listening, clearly conveying ideas) and public speaking.
  • A strong commitment to CWJ’s mission and values of social and racial justice.
  • Ability to work with coalition partners in faith-based groups and labor unions.
  • Experience working with a diverse community of people, including immigrants and people of color.
  • Some understanding of current wage and hour labor laws.
  • Resilience, passion, and willingness to learn and take direction.
  • Willingness to work irregular hours, including evenings and weekends.

PREFERRABLE ADDITIONAL SKILLS

  • Good skills of social media administration and mass email systems.
  • Excellent computer knowledge including MS Office, google, Canva, and other computer applications.
  • Access to an insured vehicle and valid driver’s license.

WORK SCHEDULES
An average of 40-50 hours per week, which may fluctuate as per the job needs. Flexibility to respond to evening and weekend duty is a must.

SALARY AND BENEFITS

  • Base annual salary $50,000. Eligible to increase after six months from a satisfactory employment.
