Job Description and Duties

Under the general direction of the Information Technology Supervisor II, the Information Technology Specialist I is responsible for the administration of the Department's backup/recovery and server environments. The Information Technology Specialist I works in a team which manages Windows servers, Linux servers, and backup/recovery systems within VMware and Hyper-V environments. Additionally, the Information Technology Specialist I is responsible for planning, installation, configuration, and operation of server infrastructure technologies. This includes, but is not limited to: server network design, storage management, operating systems, software utilities, and diagnostic tools used within the California Highway Patrol (CHP). These systems are an integral part of providing application support for highly available CHP operations and continued public safety for the Technical Services Group.

Working Conditions

This position is eligible for a hybrid telework schedule upon completion of the probationary period for employees who can satisfactorily perform their essential work functions independently and remotely. Specific telework schedules may be discussed further during the interview process. Telework is only available to residents of California.

The  Statement of Qualifications (SOQ)serves as documentation of each applicant’s ability to present information clearly and concisely in writing.  Each question must be numbered and addressed in the same order as the questions below.  The SOQ must be typed, no more than two pages in length, and 12-point Arial font.  

1. Please describe your experience with both physical and virtual servers as a system administrator. Walk through the troubleshooting process for a common server issue, like disk space issues or network connectivity problems.
2. Please describe the steps you take to troubleshoot when you run into a technical issue with a server.
3. Describe one or two past experiences working in teams on server projects. How did you collaborate, resolve conflicts, and achieve effective communication within your team?

Desirable Qualifications

In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:

Strong, well-developed verbal and written communication skills; good organization and prioritization skills; and strong analytical and problem solving skills. May be dependable, accurate, detail oriented, team oriented, and able to provide outstanding customer service. Experience and knowledge of best practices for identifying and handling performance issues on storage is a plus.
